Pregnancy/prenatal massage is massage for the pregnant mom-to-be. It is recommended to have the obstetrician’s authorization to be seen by a massage therapist For the most part the massage is a combination of Swedish, Trager, Reiki, and others. Depending on the Trimester of the pregnancy, she may be positioned prone/supine or if in her second or third trimester, she will be pillowed and cushioned on her sides. Full-body work is permissible with a few areas avoided and given special care.
Pregnancy massage is beneficial for the mom because of the weight gain and shift in center of gravity, the weight distribution can strain the back and pinch the nerves causing sciatic pain. In addition, the weight gain can cause some fluid retention in the ankles and massage is great for stimulating the lymphatic flow, thereby, decrease in swelling.
It is overall a great psychological boost to get through the ever changing metamorphosis within the female body.
Infant massage:
Infant massage is most excellent for any infant but especially so for high risk infants (with a doctor’s permission) the light and gentle circular motion touch is a wonderful stimulus to growth and is a bonding & connecting communication with the infant, encouraging relaxation. Massage helps colicky and stressed infants to sleep and rest, which aids in their growth and happier dispositions.
